It only compares the spread of your process to the spread allowed by the spec. A process could have an excellent CP value on paper while still producing defective parts \u2014 because CP simply doesn&#8217;t account for the process drifting off-center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"29:1-29:246;2398-2643\">Think of it like asking &#8220;is this parking spot wide enough for my car?&#8221; without checking whether the car is actually parked in the middle of the spot. The spot being wide enough doesn&#8217;t help if the car is parked crooked and hanging over the line.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"text-text-100 mt-3 -mb-1 text-&#091;1.125rem&#093; font-bold\" data-sourcepos=\"31:1-31:26;2645-2670\">CPK: Actual Capability<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"33:1-33:256;2672-2927\">CPK takes the same variation data but also factors in how centered the process actually is within the spec limits. It answers a more honest question: &#8220;Given where this process is actually running, right now, how likely is it to produce parts within spec?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"35:1-35:359;2929-3287\">Because CPK accounts for centering, it will always be equal to or lower than CP for the same process. If CP and CPK are close together, the process is well-centered. If there&#8217;s a big gap between them, the process has plenty of potential capability but is running off-center \u2014 meaning it&#8217;s likely producing more defects than the CP number alone would suggest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"37:1-37:177;3289-3465\">This is exactly why relying on CP alone can be misleading.
